Phew! What a packed Day in the Bay we had! We think around 8,000 adults and children browsed through the markets and food stalls, or chilled out in Shorland Park listening to the talented musical line up. In fact, many of our stallholders told us it was the busiest Day in the Bay yet!
A highlight of the day was The Blessing of the Boats - a spectacle not to be missed. The crowds lined the beach and the Esplanade to see the boats parade the Bay, all dressed up for their big day with our distinguished visiting clergy.
The expertise of the skippers and crew was clearly evident in the seemingly effortless way they maneouvered their boats past each other.
A big thanks to everyone for making this such a great day. From everyone who attended, our volunteers, stallholders, community groups and visiting officials. It was the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that saw thousands of families have a fun day out! Keep an eye out for photo’s on this website soon.
So what’s next? Check out the Festival Programme for more festival events over the upcoming week!
Island Bay Festival – 29 years of community fun
The Island Bay Festival celebrates the talent and diversity of the South Coast. This annual 9-day summer festival runs from 9 – 17 February and features over 30 fabulous events, hosted by a broad cross section of the Island Bay community.
This year it’s the festival’s 29th anniversary, making it one of the longest running festivals in Wellington – all held in the beautiful location of Island Bay.
Once again, Island Bay will explodes with colour, food, craft and lively performances. Over these nine days there are special events for kids and adults alike.
Laze about for the whole day while we entertain the kids with the carnival, markets, bands & entertainers, competitions, Carnevale Italia and the Blessing of the Boats. New this year and not to be missed, is the locally prepared hangi from the Tapu Te Ranga Marae.
The festival is governed by the Island Bay Enhancement Trust. We are a group of local residents who volunteer to assist the development of our community. The Trust takes great pride in coordinating the Island Bay Festival, an annual event celebrating the talent and diversity of the local neighborhood and Wellington in general.
