HISTORY

In February 2014 the Island Bay Festival celebrated 30 years of showcasing the talent and diversity of the South Coast. The annual 9-day summer festival is held every year and is made up main event days and community events.

The organisation of the festival is overseen by the Island Bay Enhancement Trust. The trustees are a small group of locals from both arts and business backgrounds.  They volunteer their time to put the festival on every year.

Current trustees are: Joe Bleakley, Peter Frater, Mike Jones and Jo Bushe

The Island Bay Festival

Each year the festival opens with a Festival Parade and Variety Show on the Saturday. Crowds of locals line the streets and head to Shorland Park to see their kids and community groups perform on the Band Rotunda stage.

The next day is the Day in the Bay which is a major Wellington event - part of the Summer City calendar of events sponsored by the council.  This is not only a market and entertainment day, it's a day that celebrates Island Bay's heritage including the Blessing of the fishing boats in the Bay and the Carnevale Italia.

The following Saturday belongs to the Ribble Street Races, honoring the history of Island Bay as a race track.  The downhill trolley derby is a firm favourite with people who have a need for speed and/or nostalgia!

The festival finishes with a Teddy Bears Picnic on the 2nd Sunday.  This is organised and run by our local community churches and offers great entertainment for the kids.

Host AN EVENT

We enjoy showcasing the talent and diversity of the South Coast throughout the festival and rely on the community to host events across the 9 days.

If you'd like your event to be part of the Island Bay Festival 2015, we can help with marketing the event on our website and Facebook.  Of course, you'll need to organize the event and do a bit of marketing too eg. posters.

Register your interest in hosting by hitting Apply and completing the online form.  We'll be in touch around October/November.  If your event needs funding and you'd like some advice on where you could apply for this, contact us on IBFwebsite@gmail.com.

Volunteer

The Island Bay Festival relies on volunteers, from the governing Trust (the folk that oversee the Festival) through to traffic management on our event days.

Every year we need volunteers to help with events during the festival.  If you'd like to get involved, why not volunteer to run an event, or simply help with an event on the Day.

Get involved by hitting Apply below.
