about the island bay Festival

The Island Bay Festival has run for 31 years, showcasing the talent and diversity of the South Coast. This annual 9-day summer festival is held every February with three main event days; The Parade & Variety Show, The Day in the Bay and Ribble Street Races.  There are around 30 different community events held over the nine days.

The Island Bay Festival is organised by our talented Festival Co-ordinators.  There is usually a Co-ordinator for each major event day. The organisation is overseen by the Island Bay Enhancement Trust. The trustees are a small group of locals from both arts and business backgrounds. Current trustees are: Joe Bleakley, Peter Frater, Mike Jones, Diane Hughes and Jo Bushe.

main event days

Day 1 - Each year the festival opens with a Festival Parade and Variety Show, usually on the 2nd Saturday of February. Crowds of locals line the streets to watch the Festival Parade and follow it down to Shorland Park to watch local community and school groups perform on the Band Rotunda stage.

Day 2 - The Day in the Bay is a major event in the Summer City calendar sponsored by Wellington City Council.  This is not only a great Festival day with entertainment, funfairs and markets - it's also shows thousands of visitors the unique character of Island Bay's heritage including the stunning blessing of the fishing boats and the Carnevale Italia.

Day 8 - Honoring Island Bay's history as a race track, Ribble Street is closed off for racing including a downhill trolley derby.  There is a great Street Party atmosphere and it's a firm family favourite that can be enjoyed by everyone!

HOST AN EVENT

We have a lot of talent and great ideas stemming from the South Coast.  If you've got a great idea for an event and would like to be part of the Island Bay Festival 2016, we can help you with marketing the event on our website and Facebook, and even give advice on running an event or getting funding if you need it.

If you have a great idea for an event and time to organise it, register your interest by completing the online form.  We'll be in touch around October/November to discuss taking your ideas further.  If your event needs funding and you'd like some advice on where you could apply for this, contact us at IBFwebsite@gmail.com.

tAKE PART AND Volunteer

The Island Bay Festival relies on volunteers - whether it's being a Trustee (the folk that oversee the Festival), organising an event, a marshal in the Festival Parade or managing traffic, there will always be an important role for volunteers.

If you'd like to get involved, apply to be a volunteer for the Island Bay Festival 2016 using the link below.
